Since not only law students need writing skills, others following business English courses might find the advice of David Ogilvy \u2013 an iconic businessman and original \u201cMad Man\u201d – convincing: <\/span><\/p>\n

  1. The better you write, the higher you go in Ogilvy & Mather. People who think well, write well.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n
  2. Woolly minded people write woolly memos, woolly letters and woolly speeches.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n
  3. Good writing is not a natural gift. You have to learn to write well. Here are 10 hints:<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n
  4. Read the Roman-Raphaelson <\/span>book on writing<\/span><\/a>. Read it three times.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n
  5. Write the way you talk. Naturally.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n
  6. Use short words, short sentences and short paragraphs.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n
  7. Never use jargon words like <\/i>reconceptualize<\/i>, <\/i>demassification<\/i>, <\/i>attitudinally<\/i>, <\/i>judgmentally<\/i>. They are hallmarks of a pretentious ass.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  8. Never write more than two pages on any subject.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n
  9. Check your quotations.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n
  10. Never send a letter or a memo on the day you write it. Read it aloud the next morning \u2014 and then edit it.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n
  11. If it is something important, get a colleague to improve it.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n
  12. Before you send your letter or your memo, make sure it is crystal clear what you want the recipient to do.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n
  13. If you want ACTION, don\u2019t write. Go and tell the guy what you want.<\/strong> <\/i><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
